In University Park, work continues for the adaptive reuse of a historic landmark into permanent supportive housing.

Casa de Rosa, located at the southeast corner of Adams Boulevard and Hoover Street, opened in the late 19th century as one of Los Angeles' first private kindergartens.  In decades, the property was served a variety of purposes, including a women's preparatory school, a hotel, military barracks, and even the headquarters of the headquarters of L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics Foundation.

Starting in the 1950s, the property became a shelter for homeless women, alternatively known as the "Sunshine Mission."  However, the facility ceased operations in the late 2000s after the non-profit organization ran short of funding, according to the Daily Trojan.

The property, which is now owned by the City of Los Angeles, is a year-and-a-half into an $18-million restoration which will transform its buildings into 37 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, catering to single-parent homeless veterans earning less than 60 percent of the area median income.

Integral Development and Ward Economic Development Corporation are developing the adaptive reuse project, which is designed by M2A Architects.

At the time of the project's groundbreaking, completion was anticipated in Spring 2020.
