In June, the California Strategic Growth Council awarded $23.8 million in funding for the development of affordable housing and new transit projects in unincorporated East Los Angeles.
Including in the award is nearly $14 million in funding for 3rd & Dangler, a proposed development from National CORE. The project, slated for a Los Angeles County-owned property, calls for the construction of a four-story building featuring 78 affordable and supportive housing units - restricted to 60 percent of the area median income - with on-site services and a 39-car garage.
Togawa Smith Martin is designing the contemporary low-rise development, which is named for the intersection at which it is located.
Construction of the apartment complex is expected to begin in March 2021 and conclude after in March 2023.
The State also awarded approximately $9.4 million in funding to Metro, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), and Los Angeles County for active transportation and public amenities in the surrounding East Los Angeles neighborhood.
Metro and LADOT will use the money to purchase a total of 10 electric and zero-emission buses to support enhanced service for the 70 bus line along the Garvey-Cesar Chavez corridor. New bus shelters and other passenger amenities are planned as part of the project.
The County will use its funding to add new walking paths, lighting, and landscaping to Belvedere Park - which is located a short distance east next to Metro's East L.A. Civic Center light rail station.
Other planned projects include sidewalk repair, curb ramp upgrades, street trees, and crosswalks near bus stops. Additionally, the State funds will support the installation of new bicycle infrastructure along 4th Street, Ferris Avenue, as well as new connections between existing facilities on Mednik Avenue and 6th Street.
