In Downtown Los Angeles, Related Cos. has reached the halfway mark at The Grand, a $1-billion skyscraper complex designed by architect Frank Gehry. 

Located across the street from the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the project is highlighted by two high-rise towers.

The larger of the two buildings - located on 2nd Street between Grand Avenue and Olive Street - will be a 39-story tower containing 436 residential units  - more than 80 of which will be set aside as deed-restricted affordable housing.

The second tower - a 20-story building located along the 1st Street side of the property - will contain a 309-room Equinox Hotel, meeting rooms, and restaurant space.

The two towers will flank a landscaped courtyard fronting Grand Avenue.  In addition to providing a north-south pedestrian link to Olive Street, the planned plaza will be lined with more than 176,000 square feet of stores and restaurants.

Both towers are scheduled to top out in 2021, setting the stage for an opening date for The Grand in early 2022.

The project is the signature element of the larger Grand Avenue Project, which also includes The Broad contemporary art museum, the 20-story Emerson apartment tower, and Grand Park.  A final component to the project is slated to replace another parking lot on the south side of Olive Street.

The Grand is also the second in a series of Gehry-designed landmarks on Bunker Hill, following Disney Hall.  A third project - a proposed expansion of the Colburn School - will reportedly cost $310 million.

Other major construction projects in the near vicinity include the Regional Connector's 2nd/Hope subway station, which will supplement an existing Metro stop at 1st and Hill Streets.
