The LAX Automated People Mover - the centerpiece of the airport's $5.5-billion landside access modernization program - has cleared a key milestone.
The 2.25-mile system, which will connect the central terminal area with two new intermodal transportation facilities (ITF) and a consolidated rental car facility, officially broke ground in March 2019 and is poised for completion in 2023.
Work on the project had progressed to the construction of new support columns within the central terminal area as of January, and this past weekend, crews placed approximately 1,000 cubic yards of concrete near the future ITF west station at Aviation Boulevard. This is the first major concrete pour for the people mover, which will eventually require comprised of approximately 72,000 cubic yards of concrete when finished.
Following the completion of the concrete guideways, work will proceed to steel construction at the two ITF stations - as well as within the CTA and rental car terminal.
The people mover system, when operational, will operate with nine trains in four-car sets capable of hosting 200 passengers. Service will run every two minutes with an end-to-end travel time of 10 minutes.
At a later date, the people mover will also connect with a $500-million light rail transit hub planned at the intersection of Aviation Boulevard and Arbor Vitae Street. The at-grade station will be served by Metro's C (Green) and Crenshaw/LAX Lines, in addition to various bus lines.
