The redevelopment of the historic Whittier State School and Correctional Facility has reached a key milestone.
The Groves in Whittier, which was developed by Brookfield Residential and Lennar Corp., spans across a roughly 75-acre property at 11850 Whittier Boulevard. The project includes 561 for-sale homes, which are priced between $400,000 and $900,000, according to a project website.
Additional housing will come in a 189-unit rental apartment building called Altura, which is scheduled to open in early 2022.
Separately, Frontier Real Estate Investments is developing nearly 160,000 square feet of shops and restaurants within the Groves. Announced tenants include Stater Bros Markets, Chipotle, and In-N-Out Burger.
The project also includes the restoration of several historic buildings from the shuttered school and correctional facility, which was founded on the property in the late 19th century. The four preserved buildings - including the school's administration building, chapel, and two residences - have been repurposed as an event and gathering space.
The various commercial and residential uses within the site will be linked together by a series of pocket park, as well as a walking trail.
