Protective fencing and heavy equipment have appeared at a long-vacant site in Mid-City, where the City of Los Angeles has issued building permits for the construction of a $32.7-million senior affordable housing complex.
The project site, located at the southwest corner of Pico and Crenshaw Boulevards, is approved for the construction of a five-story, 54-unit apartment complex reserved for very low-income senior households and approximately 2,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
Abode Communities is designing the proposed development, which is depicted as a contemporary low-rise structure in a conceptual rendering. Building permits indicate that the project will include ancillary features such as a community room, a laundry facility, a roof deck, and a landscaped courtyard.
According to an application for tax credit financing, the apartments will command rents starting at $548 per month.
Completion of the Amani is expected in the third quarter of 2022, according to a notice issued by general contractor R.D. Olson Construction.
Wakeland, which is based out of San Diego, is developing similar housing projects in Westlake, Pico-Union, and Vermont Square.
