The former site of a Christian church in Westchester is poised for redevelopment with a mix of affordable and permanent supportive housing.

The proposed project - called the Kite Crossing Apartments - would rise from a nearly two-acre property located at 8333 Airport Boulevard.  Non-profit developer Community Corp. of Santa Monica is planning the construction of a new four-story edifice featuring 102 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments - ranging from 546 to 1,041 square feet in size - above 78 parking spaces on a single subterranean level.

KFA Architecture is designing Kite Crossing, which would have an E-shaped footprint wrapping around two landscaped courtyards and a rear yard.  Other planned features include a two community rooms and case management offices for on-site service providers.

The project - which will house a mix of low-income residents, formerly homeless persons, and seniors - is the first affordable housing development planned in the Westchester neighborhood, Councilmember Mike Bonin announced in a recent newsletter.

Kite Crossing has received the endorsement of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa Del Rey, the Westchester Town Center Business Improvement District, and the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association.  However, the project has not yet been approved by the City of Los Angeles.

Community Corp., which has focused the bulk of its efforts in its hometown of Santa Monica, is not a stranger to developing in the City of Los Angeles.  The non-profit organization broke ground in late 2019 on Vista Ballona, a similar 50-unit affordable housing complex now under construction in Mar Vista.

The Kite Crossing development will rise just over a half-mile west of a new Metro rail construction now being built at Hindry Avenue as part of the Crenshaw/LAX Line.  A half-mile northeast along La Tijera, a mixed-use housing development known as the 7403 opened in 2019.
