A presentation scheduled for the April 7 meeting of the Westwood Design Review Board offers a look at updated plans for a new apartment complex just west of the UCLA campus.
Landmark Properties, an Athens, Georgia-based company specializing in housing developments catering to college students, is seeking city approvals to build a new seven-story, 37-unit apartment complex at 10915 W. Strathmore Drive. The project, which would replace a Lutheran church, would include a mix of two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom apartments, a portion of which would be set aside as affordable housing at the very low-income level.
While a November 2020 entitlement submission included design work by Humphreys & Partners, the updated presentation indicates that LOHA has taken over as the architect of the project, which is named "The Mark at Los Angeles." The revised design breaks the mass of the building into a series of cubic forms, with upper level setbacks used to create numerous terrace decks. The building, clad in fiber cement boards and corrugated metal panels, would have a U-shaped footprint wrapping a street-level courtyard along Strathmore.
The current plan for The Mark, which is slightly smaller than the 39-unit development proposed, bears some cosmetic similarities to another LOHA-designed project in Westwood: the SL11024 apartments at the intersection Levering Avenue and Strathmore.
The private development comes on the heels of UCLA's nearly $900-million expansion of its own student housing capacity, which will eventually result in the construction of more than 5,000 student beds. The university is also planning faculty housing in at the intersection of Hilgard Avenue and Lindbrook Drive.
