In East Los Angeles, developer Meta Housing Corp. is now one year into construction at the La Paz Apartments, a new affordable housing complex located just west of the massive Calvary Cemetery.
The three-story building, which is located at the northwest corner of Whittier Boulevard and Downey Avenue, will feature 42 apartments and 1,161 square feet of ground-floor retail space upon completion.

The project will include a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom dwellings priced for households earning 35 percent or less than the area median income, according to a 2019 staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee. At the time, it was expected that rents would range from $509 to $654 per month.
Gonzalez Goodale Architects is designing the La Paz development, which is depicted as a contemporary low-rise structure clad in corrugated metal panels.
Meta Housing, a prolific developer of supportive and income-restricted apartments across Los Angeles County, recently completed construction of a companion development at the southeast corner of the same intersection.

The developer's other under-construction projects include new housing in Sylmar, North Hills, and Downtown.
La Paz sits one block east of a similar development now being built by East L.A. Community Corp. at 4101-4117 Whittier Boulevard.
