In September 2020, the nearly-finished frame of a permanent supportive housing complex in East Los Angeles was destroyed in a fire.  Nearly one year later, developer East L.A. Community Corporation is ready to start the project anew.

"[We] are happy to announce that construction on El Nuevo Amanecer will resume again in late summer/early fall 2021," ELACC announced via its website last week.  "ELACC is committed to working with our partners to rebuild this development and bring desperately needed housing affordability to our community."

The project, located at the northwest corner of 1st Street and Rowan Avenue, is to consist of a four-story edifice featuring 61 apartments above approximately 7,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.  The housing is to be reserved for formerly homeless veterans and low-income families.

Plans call for a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with rents ranging from $545 to $1,260 per month, according to a staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee.

Birba Group Architects' design for the project calls for a Spanish Colonial Revival style building featuring a street-level pedestrian plaza at the intersection of 1st and Rowan.

The project budget is estimated at approximately $40 million.

ELACC, in addition to the El Nuevo Amanecer development, is also building supportive housing on Whittier Boulevard in East L.A. and on Huntingon Drive in El Serene.  The non-profit organization's upcoming projects also include new housing developments near the L Line's Soto and Mariachi Plaza stations in Boyle Heights.
