Yesterday, AMCAL Multi-Housing, Inc. broke ground on Las Ventanas, a mixed-use affordable housing development in Midtown Long Beach.

The nearly $50-million development, located at the southwest corner of Long Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, will consist of a four-story building featuring 102 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, reserved for individuals and families earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income.  A total of 15 units are to be reserved for currently homeless households, or those at risk of becoming homeless.

The project, which will abut Metro's Pacific Coast Highway light rail station, will also include 8,167 square feet of outdoor recreation space and 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

“We are thrilled to see new affordable housing construction at a time when access to affordable housing is so vital,” said First District Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, who represents the area, in a statement. “I’m thankful that the City was able to work with important partners that will activate this key site and enhance our major transit corridor.”

“Las Ventanas is the third affordable housing development to begin construction in 2019 and supports the recommendations of the City’s Everyone Home Long Beach initiative,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “We will continue to expand housing opportunities across all parts of the City to provide high-quality affordable homes and access to supportive services.”

The other two projects - which are also located near Pacific Coast Highway Station - are Clifford Beers Housing's 48-unit Vistas del Puerto development and LINC Housing's 95-unit Spark at Midtown. Las Ventanas is expected to open in 2021.
