In Gardena, an automobile repair shop has made way for the construction of a new single-room occupancy apartment complex.
The project is the largest yet from Cocoon, a company that has already built two similar developments elsewhere in Gardena. The new development at 13126 S. Western Avenue will consist of a four-story edifice featuring 121 apartments with parking for 120 vehicles. The apartments are to be 350 square feet in size, all including a kitchen and a bathroom.
DE Architects is designing the building, which would feature a courtyard, a pool, and a fitness room, as well as ground floor units to activate the streetscape.
"Since the adjacent blocks consist of 1 and 2 story industrial buildings, the project is designed to create its own pedestrian oriented urban context, as well as a provide a base context for potential future residential projects," reads a narrative provided to the City of Gardena in 2022. "The building mass is stepped from 4 stories to 2 stories at the northeast corner, to act as a transition to the scale of the surrounding neighborhood."
Other Cocoon developments are located at sites along Normandie Avenue.
