The owner of a 52-room motel across the street from the Americana at Brand is moving closer to redeveloping the property with a new AC Hotel by Marriott, under an agreement scheduled for consideration at the April 7 meeting of the Glendale City Planning Commission.
Vista Investments, an El Segundo-based real estate firm, is planning to raze the 1970s Vagabond Inn at 120 W. Colorado Street, making way for a new six-story edifice containing 130 guest rooms above a 130-car subterranean parking garage.
The project, which is being designed by Vista's subsidiary Vista Design/Build, is depicted as a contemporary podium-type structure with an exterior of painted stucco and cement. Plans call for a U-shaped footprint on the building's upper floors, wrapping an outdoor pool deck. Other ancillary features would include a lounge, a fitness center, and meeting rooms.
The Planning Commission is slated to consider a request from Vista Investments to extend project entitlements, which are scheduled to expire next month, for a period of up to six years. According to a staff report, the developer has indicated that current economic conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have reduced the viability of hotel projects. An extension would provide time for the hospitality sector to recover, allowing Vista to secure construction financing.
Vista previously developed a Hampton Inn & Suites, which occupies an L-shaped property next-door to the proposed AC Hotel.
Outside of Glendale, Vista is also behind plans to redevelop another Vagabond Inn near USC with a dual-branded 275-room hotel.
