Later this year, service is scheduled to begin on the first phase of the $9.5-billion subway extension to the Westside, with new stations opening at Wilshire Boulevard's intersections with La Brea Avenue, Fairfax Avenue, and La Cienega Boulevard. At the far west end of the line, just past the 405 Freeway, things remain in a less finished state.
The final stop on the D Line will be located at the south side of Wilshire Boulevard within the footprint of the sprawling West Los Angeles VA Campus. Aerial photography shows construction well underway for the underground station box, A rendering of the finished product shows a large plaza sitting slightly below the elevation of Wilshire Boulevard, connected to the street via a pedestrian bridge.
The VA Campus Station, along with the prior stop at Wilshire and Westwood Boulevard, are the main components of the third and final leg of the subway extension, which will be served by the D Line when completed in 2027. A second phase including stops at near Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and in Century City are slated to debut one year earlier in 2026.
When the full nine-mile extension from Wilshire/Western Station to the VA Campus is completed, Metro projects the D Line will attract 53,000 new daily riders. Those passengers will be able to make the trip between Downtown Los Angeles and the Westside in approximately 30 minutes, which represents a speedier journey than the typical rush hour 10 Freeway commute.
