Construction has commenced for a new affordable housing complex in Compton, the city recently announced via social media.

The project from The Coalition for Responsible Community Development and LandSpire Group, LLC, which will rise from a previously vacant site at 1434 W. Compton Boulevard. Plans call for the construction of a three-story building featuring 75 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments reserved for households earning up to 50 percent of the area median income level.

Y&M Architects is designing the project, which is shown in a rendering as a contemporary low-rise structure. In addition to housing, the development would include laundry facilities, a community room, a courtyard, a seating area, a basketball court, and parking.

Key Bank recently announced a $25.9-million construction loan for the project. Previously, CRCD secured $15.4 million in state funding for construction.

Completion is expected in May 2027.
