A church in Inglewood will become the latest religious institution in Southern California to build affordable housing in "God's backyard."
At a ceremony earlier this month, officials with the City of Inglewood and Inglewood First United Methodist Church broke ground on a new housing complex on the church's land at 304 E. Spruce Avenue. Plans call for the construction of a four-story building featuring 60 residential units.
Inglewood officials authorized the issuance of up to $30 million in bond financing for the project last year, which the Los Angeles Sentinel will cost $50 million to complete.
The 40,000-square-foot development is a result of SB 4, state legislation signed in 2023 which streamlines the development of housing on land owned by religious institutions. Several developers have teamed on similar projects at sites within the City of Los Angeles in the past three years.
Completion of the Inglewood project is expected in Spring 2028, according to the Sentinel.
