Construction is complete for a new affordable housing complex at the intersection of 62nd Street and Normandie Avenue in South Los Angeles, HACLA announced this week.
The Sunnyside apartments, a joint venture from Restore Neighborhoods L.A. and Holos Communities, occupies a corner lot at 1408 W. 62nd Street and 6201 S. Normandie Avenue. The roughly 6,000-square-foot property has been transfoirmed into a four-story building featuring 27 apartments - including 26 affordable studio units - with on-site social services.
“Sunnyside is the quintessential example of the huge impact a small lot could have, and the key is siting next to public transportation along a major arterial," said Holos Communities executive director Cristian Ahumada in a news release. "Let’s keep the low-density integrity of single family neighborhoods in suburbia, and go up where it makes sense, next to transit. These sites are crucial to expanding our housing stock. Instead of housing one or two families on this site, twenty-six individuals will now be able to call Sunnyside their new home."

Lehrer Architects is designing Sunnyside, while Studio-MLA served as landscape architect. The contemporary low-rise building includes a community room and a landscaped deck.
Funding sources for the project include Measure HHH Innovation dollars, as well as Section 8 from the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, which were leveraged to secure Low Income Housing Tax Credits.
Holos and RNLA are also co-developing a similar project at 405 N. Westlake Avenue in Historic Filipinotown.
