At a ceremony last week, the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD) and Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) marked the completion of Dean's Place, a new supportive housing complex located in the unincorporated Westmont community.
Located at 9426 S. Normandie Avenue, the project consists of a three-story structure featuring 57 apartments and parking for six vehicles. The property is comprised entirely of studios units, and serves renters earning up to 30 percent of the area median income level.
The name "Dean's Place," is in honor of former LTSC executive director Dean Matsubayashi, who died in 2019, and worked with both organizations involved in the development.
"Dean was instrumental in establishing CRCD in the early 2000's, championing community investment in South LA through a place-based model promoting community self-determination and local control over resources and decision-making," said LTSC co-executive director Takao Suzuki in a news release. "His vision for place-based community development through thoughtful partnership set the trajectory for LTSC's current day portfolio of 1,300 affordable units built in partnership with 20 community organizations across Los Angeles. It's fitting that we celebrate the grand opening of Dean's Place along with CRCD's 20th anniversary, LTSC's 45th anniversary, and Dean's birthday (March 28)."
The project site sits diagonally across the intersection of 95th and Normandie from a recently-completed pocket park.
Both CRCD and LTSC are active developers of affordable housing, attached to numerous other projects across the city.
