The City of Los Angeles is poised to advance a proposed affordable housing development in the West L.A.-Sawtelle area later this month. 

By the end of January, a request will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to release Section 8 Project-based vouchers for the Missouri Place Apartments, a proposed apartment building which would replace the shuttered West L.A. Animal Shelter at 11950 W. Missouri Avenue.  Approximately $11.1 million in funds are requested for the project, to be paid out in installments over the course of 15 years.

The proposed apartment complex is being developed by Thomas Safran & Associates, and would consist of a six-story building containing 74 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with a 41-car garage, a courtyard, a fitness room, a community room, and offices for on-site supportive services.  The $34.8-million development would be made available to households at the low- and very low-income affordability levels.

A rendering portrays a contemporary mid-rise structure, similar to nearby market-rate developments.  The project is being designed by Withee Malcolm Architects.

According to information published by the California State Treasurer's Office, construction of the Missouri Place Apartments is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2019 and conclude by the third quarter of 2020.

The project site is located just north Metro's Expo/Bundy Station, where a mixed-use development featuring apartments, office space, and retail is slated to replace the Martin Cadillac dealership.
