In Lincoln Heights, construction is in full swing for Albion Riverside Park. 

Located at Albion Street and Avenue 17 along the east bank of the Los Angeles River, the park will function as a six-acre expansion of the nearby Downey Recreation Center.  Plans call for athletic fields, fitness equipment, walking paths, playgrounds, and a picnic area.  The new green space will connect to the river with a bioswale and observation area, and to the Downey Recreation Center through a walkway beneath the abutting Spring Street Bridge.

The $44-million project is funded through a variety of sources, including Proposition O, Proposition 84, and Proposition K.

Construction kicked off for the park in May 2017, and is expected to be completed later this year.

Albion Riverside Park emerges in the wake of the long-awaited completion of Los Angeles State Historic Park, which transformed a former rail yard on the opposite side of the river into public green space.

Both parks are located within the Cornfield Arroyo Specific Plan area, which regulates land use and development in the areas northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.  Five years after its adoption, an effort is currently underway to amend the plan, as it has so far failed to generate a single unit of housing.
