Plans for a bioscience office park at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Campus has taken another step forward, per a motion from L.A. County Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Janice Hahn.
Last year, the Board of Supervisors approved $3 million to create a 20,000-square-foot incubator within LA BioMed's 78,000-square-foot research facility that is scheduled to break ground at the campus next month. Now, the Board is looking to partner with the nonprofit research institute on the development of a larger 250,000-square foot bioscience tech park on the west side of the property.
The larger facility would "provide affordable expansion space for early stage bioscience companies and start-ups," with the intention of producing a ecosystem development model that could be replicated at other locations in L.A County.
The five-building complex was envisioned as part of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center's 2012 master plan.
Moving forward, the Supervisors have directed the L.A. County CEO to enter into discussions with LA BioMed regarding an exclusive negotiating agreement for the project.
