Earlier this week, the City of Burbank unveiled its draft Safer Street action plan, rolling out a series of policy prescriptions and infrastructure projects intended to make the city's roadways safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Initiated by the Burbank City Council in 2023, the draft plan notes that Burbank sees an average of 23 collisions each year which result in death or a severe injury. The action plan focuses its efforts on several stretches of road within the city with high concentrations of either fatal or severe injury collisions. The corridors include:

  • Glenoaks Boulevard between Cypress Avenue and Olive Avenue;
  • Victory Boulevard between Burbank Boulevard and Providencia Avenue;
  • Alameda Avenue between Main Street and Glenoaks Boulevard;
  • Hollywood Way from Vanowen Street to Clark Avenue;
  • Vanowen Street from Ontario Street to Buena Vista Street;
  • San Fernando Boulevard from the I-5 On/Off Ramp to Cypress Avenue;
  • Victory Boulevard from Ontario Street to Burbank Boulevard;
  • Buena Vista Street from San Fernando Boulevard to Clark Avenue; and
  • Olive Avenue from Orchard Drive to 6th Street.

Short term improvements recommended for these corridors largely consist of similar measures such as restriping intersections with high-visibility crosswalks, the addition of curb extensions, new protected left turn signals, speed feedback signs, leading pedestrian intervals, and improved signal timing. Longer-term fixes may include new street lighting, new signalized intersections, and separated bikeways on corridors including Victory Boulevard, Hollywood Way, and Vanowen Street.

Public meetings to provide additional feedback on will occur at the following times and locations:

  • Transportation Commission: Wednesday, July 23rd at 5:00PM  Community Services Building, Room 104, 150 N. Third Street Or, provide virtual comment during the meeting agenda here.
  • City Council Meeting: Tuesday, August 12th at 6:00PM Burbank City Hall 275 E. Olive Ave
