In the San Gabriel Valley, work continues for the Foothill Gold Line's nine-mile extension to Pomona, as shown in new photos published by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority.

The project, now nearly 90 percent complete, will add four new stations to the east of the A Line's current terminus in Azusa, including stops in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona. That adds to the 49 miles and 44 stations which are already traversed by the A Line - the longest light rail line in the world.

Testing on light rail vehicles is now underway, and the project is scheduled for substantial completion and turnover to Metro in just over five months.

Even when the ongoing extension to Pomona is complete, that will not be the end of work on the Foothill Gold Line. Last month, state transportation officials announced the release of $500 million in previously frozen funds for the next phase of the Foothill Extension, which would add an additional 3.2 miles of track and stops in Claremont and Montclair. Those elements were cut from the current project due to swelling construction costs.

The Montclair extension is also notable as it will make the A Line the first Metro rail service to extend out of Los Angeles County borders and into neighboring San Bernardino County. The Daily News reports that San Bernardino County is prepared to spend $80 million to pay for the one mile of new rail which would be located within its borders.
