The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' $388-million museum continues to make progress at the LACMA Campus.
The 300,000-square-foot facility, expected to open in 2019, is being designed by architect Renzo Piano and Gensler to serve as a permanent home for the Academy's collection of motion picture memorabilia and artifacts. It is highlighted by a 120-foot-tall glass-and-concrete sphere that is being constructed at the back of the property at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax, which will include a theater, a domed terrace space, and a store.
A former May Company Department store, renamed the Saban building, is being rehabilitated to serve as the museum's primary exhibition space. According to Western Specialty Contractors, the project includes the installation of new limestone and granite on a portion of the historic building's facade, as well as repairs to existing limestone.
Elsewhere on the LACMA campus, another architectural icon is also looking to make his mark. The museum is currently pursuing a $600-million makeover of its main facility, which calls for razing several of its existing buildings to make way for an amorphous structure by Peter Zumthor.
