After nearly eight months of construction, the central parking garage of the Jefferson on Imperial apartment complex is rising in South Gate, but work lags behind on the residential units that will wrap the concrete structure.
Located on the former site of a shopping mall at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Garfield Avenue, the project from Texas-based developer JPI is billed as the first large multifamily housing complex in Southeast Los Angeles County in three decades. The 4.1-acre site will eventually yield a four-story edifice containing 244 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments wrapping the 458-car garage.
WHA is designing Jefferson on Imperial, which is depicted in a rendering as a contemporary stucco-clad development with wood panel accents.
The project, which received $80-million in construction financing in August 2019, was slated to open by October 2020 at the time.
The development site will be located midway between two stations planned on Metro's West Santa Ana Branch light rail line, and within walking distance of a 30-acre park proposed for the east bank of the Los Angeles River.
JPI is developing similar multifamily housing projects in Downtown Long Beach and Carson.
