The Los Angeles City Council has approved funding from Measure HHH to convert a former library into Hollywood into a women's bridge housing center, according to an announcement from Councilmember David Ryu.

The property, located at 1403 N. Gardner Street, formerly known as the Will & Ariel Durant Library, is one block south of Sunset Boulevard at 1403 N. Gardner Street.  The one-story structure, vacant since 2004, could provide housing for up to 30 women, as well as accommodations for on-site staff and security.

“With the funding for construction now approved, I look forward to continuing the conversation with neighbors and community stakeholders for input as we select a service provider and other details for operating this housing site,” said Councilmember Ryu in prepared remarks.

Ryu's office first introduced a motion to convert the former library into housing in November 2017 and began initial outreach earlier in 2018.

As part of an effort to curb the regional homelessness crisis, Councilmembers have been tasked with searching out City-owned properties in their district for use as emergency homeless shelters or the development of permanent supportive housing. Properties have already been identified in Westwood, Beverly Grove, South L.A., Central Hollywood, and the San Fernando Valley.

In a separate action today, the Council also approved funding for 25 permanent supportive housing units at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Anita May Rosenstein Campus on Santa Monica Boulevard.
