With a key approval now in hand, Jerico Development and Ratkovich Co. have cleared a hurdle for the construction of the next phase of the West Harbor development in San Pedro.
On June 27, the Los Angeles Board moved to certify an environmental impact report for the revised West Harbor project, authorizing plans for a 6,200-seat amphitheater and a 175-foot-tall Ferris wheel.
The amphitheater, to be located at the southernmost portion of the 42-acre site, is being developed in partnership with Nederlander Concerts, which manages the Greek Theatre. Seating would be provided on a 50,000-square-foot lawn. The amphitheater would also include a 22,000-square-foot space for concessions and restrooms.
“Nederlander Concerts is proud to be part of this transformative project that will bring world-class live entertainment to the Los Angeles waterfront,” said Nederlander Concerts senior vice president Rena Wasserman in a news release. “With the support and vision of all of the partners in this project, we look forward to creating unforgettable experiences and contributing culturally and economically to San Pedro.”
The Ferris wheel, to be located toward the northern side of the West Harbor site, is shown surrounded by other carnival-type attractions such as a carousel.
It has previously been reported that the second phase of the project will include new tenants such as Yamashiro, Miller Butler, Coffee with Creme & Sugar, and Oakberry Acai, as well as attractions such as pickleball and padel courts. The first phase is set to debut in 2026.
The West Harbor is accompanied by the new San Pedro Waterfront Promenade, a landscaped pedestrian walkway which cuts along the waterfront and through the project site. That project is being delivered by the Port of Los Angeles.
A similar venue - with capacity for up to 12,000 spectators - is planned across the port complex on land next the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
