A member of the Los Angeles City Council wants to turn a property once slated to become the corporate headquarters of the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf into a public park.

In a motion introduced on February 12, 10th District Councilmember Heather Hutt suggests that the 3.5-acre vacant lot at 6024-6034 W. Jefferson Boulevard is an ideal location for a public park, potentially being tied into potentially tying into the neighboring Baldwin Hills Conservancy Parklands.

The motion, which has been referred to the Council's Government Operations Committee for further consideration, directs the City Administrative Officer, City Attorney, and Department of Recreation and Parks to report back on options to acquire the site.

The cost of purchasing the land is likely to be steep. After Coffee Bean put plans to build a 220,000-square-foot office campus on the site were put on hold in 2019, the land was acquired in 2022 by developer Tishman Speyer for $31 million. Although the New York-based firm has yet to seek city permits to build on the land, sites located to the north near Metro's La Cienega/Jefferson Station have been recently developed with a mix of offices and housing.

As it happens, the City of Los Angeles is also among the prior owners of the land. The site was used for vehicle and container storage from 1995 until 2017, when it was sold to Coffee Bean to facilitate the never-built development.
