City of Hope has announced the completion of a $400-million outpatient cancer center at its campus in Duarte.
“As one of the nation’s leading comprehensive cancer centers, City of Hope is visionary in the delivery of cancer care and in recognizing the needs of people with cancer and their families," said City of Hope president Marcel van den Brink in a news release. "A shift in patient demographics to younger adults and more cancer survivors living longer has created a need for City of Hope to offer both more outpatient care and supportive care."
Hope Plaza, the centerpiece of a seven-year, $1-billion revamp of the campus, replace four older structures located just south of the A Line with an eight-story, 350,000-square-foot facility featuring treatment and research facilities. Per a fact sheet, that includes 110 infusions spaces; 84 exam rooms; 32 blood draw spaces; 26 consultation rooms; 22 clinical research infusion spaces; and eight treatment rooms.
CO Architects and EwingCole, designed Hope Plaza, which is described as being inspired by the natural flow of water from the San Gabriel Mountains.
"Designed to showcase the mountains, the north face of Hope Plaza is entirely glass, highlighting the stunning seasonal views," reads a design narrative from the CO Architects website. "The east and west facades are covered in chevron-shaped anodized metal panels that shift color throughout the day. Perforated window shades allow dappled light to enter the program spaces."
The new construction is expected to increase City of Hope's capacity to see patients by 69 percent to 168,000 visits annually - and more could be on the way. The project also leaves space for a future expansion which could add 98 exam rooms, 26 consultation rooms, 21 infusion spaces, eight treatment rooms, six research spaces, and other shelled spaces that could serve for imaging, radiation, radiology, or other functions.
