With a groundbreaking ceremony on September 11, it's official: construction is underway for a street safety project along the perimeter of Los Angeles State Historic Park in Chinatown.

The Spring/Alameda Safety and Mobility Project, which Mayor Bass bills as an element of the City's Capital Infrastructure Program, will span a roughly 1.2-mile stretch of Alameda Street and North Spring Street between Union Station and Wilhardt Street. Plans call for removing one vehicle travel lane in each direction to install Class IV protected bike lanes.

“Every day, thousands of Angelenos move through the intersection of Spring and Alameda — heading to Union Station, to the LA River Bike Path, to work, to visit a small business, to school, or to see family. Now, we're making that journey safer for all of them,” said Bass in a news release.

LADOT previously announced that accessibility improvements such as curb ramps and signal upgrades will be the first elements of the project to begin work, and will wrap up in Spring 2027. Street resurfacing and re-striping (with bike lanes) is to begin in Summer 2027 and be completed by Fall 2027.

Construction is starting at Alpine and Alameda Streets, and generally occur between 7 am and 5 pm between Mondays and Saturdays.
