As part of the City of Los Angeles' ongoing effort to combat homelessness, three city-owned properties in Boyle Heights are being targeted as opportunity sites for affordable housing, according to a memo put forth by 14th District Councilmember Jose Huizar.

The first site, located at 850 N. Mission Road, is a vacant 50,000-square-foot lot with close proximity to Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center.  Huizar has moved that the City Administrative Officer and General Services Department study the possibility of building homeless housing on the site, which sits directly across the street from the Piggyback Yard freight rail facility.

The two other sites - a 12,000-square-foot lot at 318 N. Breed Street and a 27,000-square-foot lot at 249 N. Chicago Street - currently serve as surface parking lots for businesses along Cesar E Chavez Avenue.  Huizar's motion calls designating both properties as housing opportunity sites, and asks that the City Administrative Office and General Services Department to determine how to provide both affordable housing and additional public parking.
