An empty lot in South Los Angeles could soon be up for grabs, per a motion introduced last week by City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson.

The property in question, located at 1636 W. Manchester Boulevard in Council District 8, was transferred from the former Community Redevelopment Agency to the City of Los Angeles Housing Department for Disposition. In accordance with the Surplus Land Act, such properties have to be first made available for redevelopment with affordable housing, park space, or schools.

The motion from Harris-Dawson asks the Economic and Workforce Development Department, in conjunction with the Planning Department, the Housing Department, and City Attorney to report back on potential disposition options for the site.

The item has been referred to the Council's Economic Development Committee for consideration.

Given how the City of Los Angeles has offered up other public land for affordable housing in recent years, the result at 1636 Manchester could be similar to what was recently built across the street at 1623 Manchester Avenue, where a church parking lot has made way for a 50-unit income-restricted apartment building.
