In San Pedro, a 1920s building owned by the City of Los Angeles is set to be sold off as surplus property, per a motion introduced by 15th District Councilmember Tim McOsker.
The building at 643 S. Pacific Avenue, a former bank completed in 1920, is described in McOsker's motion as a nuisance to the surrounding community due to ongoing maintenance and security issues.
"As there are no plans to upgrade this facility or use it for any other City purpose, the public would be best served by the disposal of this property through the City's Surplus Property process," reads the motion.
McOsker's motion has been referred to the Council's Government Operations Committee for consideration.
Formerly the Security Trust & Savings Bank, the property most recently served as the home of the Croatian Cultural Center, which was displaced in 2016 to clear the way for the Croatian consulate general of Los Angeles to move into the building. The consulate eventually backed out of that move, citing a lack of security features on the former bank building.
