The City of Los Angeles will seek an affordable housing developer to take ownership of an apartment complex formerly owned by the Community Redevelopment Agency in Sylmar.

On September 3, the City Council authorized the Los Angeles Housing Department to issue a request for proposals for the site at 12157 San Fernando Road, which currently has 38 occupied apartments. Regulartory agreements with local and state agencies require that the apartments be rented to households earning at or below 29 and 50 percent of the area median income level.

Under the request for proposals, the proeprty would be required to be maintained as affordable housing. Additionally, the new owner would be required to rehabilitate the existing apartments without displacing existing tenants.

According to city records, the more than 42,000-square-foot building was completed in 1988 and includes 87 bedrooms.

The property sits along a stretch of San Fernando Road near the Sylmar Metrolink station which has recently seen the construction of new affordable housing developments, such as Silva Crossing from Meta Housing and LA Family Housing.
