The Los Angeles Department of Transportation has unveiled the final design for a project that will bring protected bike lanes to Hollywood Boulevard.
First reported by Streetsblog, the bike lanes would be installed as part of the Access to Hollywood project, which comes from the office of 13th District Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez. Plans call for a parking-protected bike lane between Lyman Place and Van Ness Avenue in the eastern leg of the project, as well as a protected bike lane between Van Ness Avenue and Gower Street. This could later connect to the Hollywood Walk of Fame's planned makeover, which would add bus and bike lanes to the west of Gower Street toward La Brea Avenue.
The reconfiguration of Hollywood Boulevard, when completed, is expected to reduce speeding on the corridor, provide a center left turn lane, and create safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
LADOT has also announced a second phase of the project, which would involve a short extension from the original planned eastern terminus at Lyman Place to reach the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue. That would require reconfiguring the convoluted intersection of Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, Hillhurst Avenue, Virgil Avenue, and Sunset Avenue through new left turn signal phasing, the addition of a new crossing from Hollywood to Sunset, and restriction ingress and egress to Sunset Drive to right turns only.
The extension also has the additional benefit of connecting with existing bike lanes on Sunset Boulevard, which will require removing automobile parking along the street between Hillhurst and Fountain.
The first segment between Lyman and Gower Street is to be installed in Summer 2024, while the second phase to reach Sunset Boulevard is to be installed at a later unspecified date.
