Construction has commenced for a $145-million pediatric-focused behavioral hospital in South Los Angeles, McCarthy Building Companies and architecture firm HOK announced last week.

The 103,000-square-foot Kedren Children's Village, which is tied to Kedren Community Health Center, Inc. in Watts, will include an inpatient psychiatric facility, outpatient services, and a 24-unit transitional housing development for families receiving care at the facility, as well as homeless families and persons served by Kedren. The campus will be located at 710 E. 111th Place.

Other components of the campus will include a dedicated parking structure, a physical therapy gym, and an outdoor garden. Its exterior facade is will be based on a quilt, representing the clients served by Kedren.

“This project represents a forward-thinking approach to pediatric behavioral health care,” said HOK design principal Adaeze Cadet. “Our goal is to create a facility that not only meets the clinical needs of patients but also fosters a sense of dignity, comfort, and community connection. By incorporating best practices in behavioral health and pediatric design, we are setting a new standard for care environments.”

Completion of the Children's Village is expected in Summer 2027.

The project is familiar territory for the design-build team. McCarthy Building Companies and HOK are also working on another psychiatric-focused hospital for UCLA in the Mid-Wilshire area.
