Construction commenced in March for a new affordable housing development next to the A Line in unincorporated Florence-Firestone, the L.A. County Development Authority announced in its newsletter.
The Metro @ Florence Apartments, a project from Meta Housing Corp., will rise from a site at 7220 Maie Avenue a car wash next Florence Station. Plans call for the construction of a new seven-story building featuring 160 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments reserved for households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income level. Of that total, 72 units would serve as permanent supportive housing.
In addition to housing, the project would include 12,300 square feet of open space for residents, 3,100 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 2,100 square feet of community and office space, and parking for 120 vehicles. Resident amenities would consist of an outdoor courtyard and a rooftop deck.
The project has tapped into a variety of funding sources, including $51 million in bonds among other money approved by Los Angeles County. Additionally, the California Strategic Growth Council awarded $30.8 million for the project last year through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program, which will go toward the cost of on-site supportive services, laundry facilities, outdoor recreation areas, and the purchase of nine zero emission buses.
The Metro site sites east across Maie Avenue from AMCAL's 109-unit Florence Apartments, another affordable housing complex recently built on the former site of the Florence Library.
