A unique project from Tesla is set to combine Los Angeles staples of yesteryear and today on a single site: roadside diners, drive-in theaters, and electric vehicles.
OttOmate reports that site preparation is underway for Tesla's first combination diner and charging facility, which will be located on the former site of a Shakey's restaurant at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. The new building would be surrounded by a 30-car surface parking lot, each of which would include a charging station.
Stantec is designing the restaurant, which is portrayed in a rendering as a futuristic two-story structure with outdoor seating located on a rooftop. The image also shows counter-style seating at the exterior of the building.
While not depicted in renderings, building permits also indicate that plans for a screen at the perimeter of the parking lot remains a part of the project, allowing the site to double as a drive-in theater.
The new diner is reportedly a prototype for what could be a new form of deluxe Tesla charging stations which, if successful, would be rolled out in other cities across the country.
The facility will sit directly west across Orange Drive from a new Onni Group development featuring apartments and a Level extended-stay hotel.
