Seven year after rolling out plans for new park space and public amenities along the Lower L.A. River, the County is preparing to invest in land acquisition along the river channel.
On November 6, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor voted to adopt a motion from Supervisor Janice Hahn which directs the Department of Parks and Recreation to conduct due diligence for the acquisition of a 1.16-acre parcel along the east bank of the river, adjacent to 72nd Street Equestrian Park.
The purchase would be made using grant funding from the San Gabriel & Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, and would be used to improve access to a planned 1.3-mile linear park envisioned as part of the Lower L.A. River Revitalization Plan. The property is described as a potential "anchor park facility."
Included in a motion are instructions to allocate up to $350,000 to the Parks Department for planning to cover the cost of planning, community engagement, the development design concepts, and obtaining a cost estimate.
Other projects set to shape the Lower Los Angeles River corridor are located north in the City of South Gate, where a Frank Gehry-designed cultural center is in the works at Imperial Highway and a 30-acre "urban orchard," is proposed for sites which hug the east side of the river near Firestone Boulevard.
