An updated presentation to the Los Angeles City Planning Commission has unveiled design tweaks for SB Omega, developer Barry Shy's proposed 38-story mixed-use tower in the Historic Core.
Slated for a parking lot at the southwest corner of 6th and Main Streets, the proposed 390-foot tower would include 452 residential units, over 21,000 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 860 vehicles. The mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom dwellings would be located within the tower structure, and in units wrapping a podium structure.
Since first going before the Commission in December 2017, architect David Takacs has redesigned SB Omega to create additional breaks in the podium's massing and improve compatibility with surrounding historic structures.
The tower at 6th and Main is one of three high-rise developments Shy has proposed in Downtown, joining smaller projects on Broadway and Hill Street that are also being designed by Takacs.
Other developers have also brought towers to the more vintage parts of the Central City, including twin 24-story buildings at 8th and Spring and a 35-story condo complex now underway at 4th and Broadway. Additional projects are planned near the Spring Street Arcade and Grand Central Market.
The Planning Department's staff report once again recommends approval for SB Omega.
