With plans for an Art Deco hotel tower now off the table, the owner of fast foot restaurant near the Cineramadome in Hollywood has opted instead to pursue high-rise housing.

In an application filed yesterday with the Planning Department, Galaxy Commercial Holdings proposes the redevelopment of a roughly half-acre property at 6409 Sunset Boulevard with a new 27-story building featuring 239 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments above approximately 6,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and parking for 227 vehicles.

Requested entitlements include density bonus incentives to permit a larger building than would otherwise be allowed by zoning rules at this location. In exchange, 37 of the new apartments are to be set aside for rent by very low- and moderate-income renters.

SCB is designing the tower, with Relm serving as landscape architect. Renderings depict a contemporary high-rise, standing approximately 300 feet in height, and adorned with a rooftop amenity deck.

The new filing comes within a year of Galaxy Commercial Holdings securing approvals for a larger high-rise development down to the road to the west at 6800 Sunset Boulevard.

Both projects would join a handful of approved, but as-yet unbuilt high-rise apartment towers in Hollywood A similar 28-story building was approved in 2019 to replace the former home of Amoeba at 6400 Sunset Boulevard, and the two-tower Palladium Residences development at 6201 Sunset was entitled in 2016, but never began construction after becoming embroiled in a legal battle waged by the neighboring AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
