Developer AMCAL Multi-Housing Company is seeking more than $15 million in federal funding for the construction of an affordable housing project in Historic South-Central, according to a notice distributed by the City of Los Angeles.

The Washington - Los Angeles development, slated for a a 1.4-acre site at the southeast corner of Washington Boulevard and Los Angeles Street, would replace three warehouses, a 31-unit apartment building, and a former La Opinion printing facility with a five-story edifice featuring 108 apartments, 7,300 square feet of ground-floor retail, and 75 parking stalls.  Plans call for a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units reserved for low-income families, special needs persons, and transition aged youth.

The podium-type development, which is being designed by VTBS Architects, would also include community rooms, on-site supportive services, a gym, and an 8,750-square-foot central courtyard.

The City of Los Angeles is set to submit a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on behalf of AMCAL by June 27, in the hopes of obtaining a $15.1 million in development funding and Section 8 project-based vouchers. 

Construction of the Washington - Los Angeles apartments is expected to occur over 26 months, pending approvals.

AMCAL's project would follow a similar development built near Metro's San Pedro Station by Meta Housing Corp.
