A decade after setting up shop at the former Children's Museum campus near Hansen Dam, Discovery Cube Los Angeles is getting ready for a makeover.
An initial study published by the Department of Recreation and Parks sheds light on plans to add new outdoor features to the property, which spans approximately one half-acre at 11800 Foothill Boulevard. Proposed additions include:
- a "conservation solar carousel" near the front entrance to the museum, featuring colorful images of protected and endangered species. Plans call for a shade structure adorned with solar panels which would power the ride.
- an outdoor amphitheater stage with covered seating;
- an approximately 1,250-square-foot multipurpose pavilion which could be used for educational, community, and private events;
- an exhibit focused on the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers;
- a fire ranger training camp exhibit with a fire truck and working water hose, an obstacle course, and a children's splash pad;
- a 30-foot-tall Cube adorned with solar panels, which would serve as a symbol for the museum;
- courtyard gardens with drought tolerant plants; and
- new stormwater runoff infrastructure.
A project website, which describes the project as a new "front yard," for the museum, also indicates that it will have features dedicated to dinosaurs and fossils.
Construction of the project is projected to occur in two phases over the course of approximately two years, starting as early as 2024.
