Dignity Health has submitted plans to the City of Los Angeles for a partial rebuild of Downtown's California Hospital Medical Center.
The proposed development, filed last week with the Department of City Planning, would consist of a four-story, 142,790-square-foot building that would contain an emergency department, neonatal infant care unit, antepartum, postpartum and labor and delivery services, as well as a six-story parking garage with 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
The existing hospital, which dates back nearly 130 years, contains 318 patient beds. Its official website describes it as the busiest private trauma center in Los Angeles County, and the 13th largest center for births in California. The hospital employs 1,600 people, including 400 physicians.
