Above the US-101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, construction has progressed into its final phase, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced yesterday.
The $92-million Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, under construction since 2022, will soon be extended over an adjacent local street and into an abutting hillside - work that will require utility relocation and earthmoving. Additionally, crews will have to be mindful of an underground creek below the project site and several heritage oak trees.
The Los Angeles Times notes that the bridge currently spans only across the freeway itself, with no connections to the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. The "shoulders" will provide those connections, allowing wildlife to cross from one side of the freeway to the other.
Construction of the first phase, completed earlier this year, included more than 26 million pounds of concrete, habitat features, and sound walls. Additionally, more than 6,000 cubic yards of soil have been placed atop the bridge, which will be planted with more than 50 native species starting in the Fall.
Completion of the crossing is expected in 2026.
