At long last, it seems that there is light at the end of the tunnel for the Grand Avenue Project.

The $1-billion mixed-use complex, planned for a full block across the street from the Walt Disney Concert Hall, is scheduled to break ground in Fall 2018, following years of delays and fall starts. Developer Related Companies has announced that Los Angeles-based infrastructure and construction giant AECOM will serve as construction manager for The Grand.

Designed by Frank Gehry, the project is highlighted by two towers: a 39-story building featuring 436 mixed-income apartments and condos and a 20-story, 314-room Equinox Hotel.  Additionally, plans call for a retail podium - featuring more than 209,000 square feet of shops, restaurants, open space and a movie theater - as well as a public plaza facing the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Grand, which has been stalled for over a decade, received a key shot in the arm in late 2016 when the Chinese investor CORE infused $290 million into the project.

At completion, which is tentatively scheduled to occur in 2022, the Grand will be the third component of the Grand Avenue Project, following the 19-story Emerson apartment tower and the Broad Museum.  A final phase is slated for another nearby parking lot at 1st and Hill Streets.
