Last year, Kaiser Permanente announced plans to build a medical school in Pasadena, one block south of Colorado Boulevard.  An article in the Pasadena Star-News offers a first glimpse of the propsed facility, which would be located the corner of Green Street and Los Robles Avenue.

A rendering filed with the City of Pasadena shows a four-story, 80,000-square foot facility featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and an accessible rooftop.  The new medical school would sit atop an underground parking garage with capacity for somewhere between 192 and 216 vehicles.  Construction of the low-rise structure would require the demolition of a currently vacant brick office building, which Kaiser owns alonng with other structures on the property.

The school is expected to open by Fall 2019, at which point it will begin training 48 students to become physicans within the Kaiser system.  Full enrollment of 192 students is expected by 2022.

Kaiser, which operates 14 medical centers in Southern California, intends to upend the practices of traditional schools by providing students with real world experience early on in their acdaemic careers.  Most medical schools do not provide direct patient contact until their third or fourth year, according to a representative of Kaiser.
