First modular units arrive at Beacon Landing supportive housing in San Pedro

In San Pedro, the first modular units have started to arrive at Beacon Landing, a new permanent supportive housing development from non-profit developer Abode Communities.

The project, now taking shape at the former site of a commercial building at 311-345 N. Beacon Street, will eventually consist of a four-story building featuring 90 studio apartments catering to homeless individuals above a 10-car garage. Plans also call for a community room, a patio, a laundry facility, and landscaped outdoor space.

“Beacon Landing is a shining example of how we, as affordable housing developers, can advance the needle to bring more permanent housing opportunities for our neighbors, friends, and families in need,” said Abode Communities president and chief executive officer Holly Benson in a news release. “Supportive housing is truly our best move, and it would not be possible without bold solutions from our public and private partners.”

Beacon Landing is the first of five modular supportive housing developments which will be built through a $40 million Measure HHH Innovation Challenge Award provided to Abode Communities, as well as LA Family Housing and Mercy Housing California. The projects will create a combined total of 398 supportive housing units.

LA Family Housing will provide on-site supportive services for residents of Beach Landing, including individual and group therapy, provision of employment and education resources, and connections to mental and physical health care providers.

“It is extremely important that we continue to create funding for developments like Beacon Landing,” said Councilmember Joe Buscaino. “We know that modular development is scalable and that it is a solution we must be proud of as we aim to speed up the amount of affordable housing available in Los Angeles.”

Beacon Landing is on pace for completion in mid-2023.
