The Westfield Century City may be years away from completing its highly anticipated renovation, but you can already tour the $800 million transformation thanks to a fly-through video posted to the Westfield Corporation's website.
The long delayed expansion project will add over 420,000 square feet of premium retail space to the shopping center, increasing the mall's total floor area to 1.2 million square feet. This expansion will make room for over 220 new stores and restaurants, to be situated in newly constructed space near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars. Anchor tenants within the shopping complex will include a remodeled Bloomingdale's, a new Macy's and the Nordstorm's Los Angeles flagship store. Another notable addition to the mall is the first West Coast location of the popular Italian marketplace Eataly, which will which will feature a rooftop bar with sweeping views of the Los Angeles basin.
Other features of the Westfield expansion include the Terrace, a new outdoor plaza which will be used for events and showcases. New parking garages, including one completed last year at Constellation Boulevard and Century Park West, will add 4,700 vehicle stalls to more than double the mall's current parking capacity. An official website indicates that the project will also include a 15-story, 20-unit residential tower, to be constructed at a later date.
Work on the mall expansion kicked off earlier this year with the deconstruction of Gateway West, a 12-story office building which occupied the development site for more than five decades. However, information from an e-mail tipster indicates that demolition of the Welton Becket-designed tower has recently come to a standstill, with little progress occuring during the past three weeks.
Nonetheless, completion of the Westfield Century City is still expected to occur during 2017.
