In eastern L.A. County, work is now 85 percent complete for the Foothill Gold Line extension.

The project, which began work in Summer 2020, extends service on the A Line from its current terminus in Azusa to a new stop adjacent to the Pomona North Metrolink Station. Nine miles of new track will be accompanied by four new stations at Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and the new eastern terminus in Pomona.

The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority is scheduled to hand the project over to Metro for testing in eight months.

When completed, the Foothill extension will be served by the A Line, providing a north-south route to Long Beach through the Regional Connector subway in Downtown Los Angeles. Those nine miles of track extend what is already the world's longest light rail line, with 44 stops over a nearly 49-mile trip that takes more than one-and-a-half hours to complete.

Should the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority have its way, even this extension may not be the end of the project. The Foothill extension was previously slated to run an additional three miles of track toward two stops in Claremont and Montclair, but was cut back due to a funding shortfall. As Montclair falls outside of Los Angeles County, the project will also require funding and cooperation from San Bernardino County to complete.

A request for qualifications for a design-build team for the later extension was released last month.
